Rotten vs. The British Press...

Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon appeared on UK television last night (July 28) to strongly deny recent newspaper reports calling him racist.
The star, appearing on BBC1's 'The One Show', also said he would take legal action against any publications that said otherwise, following his recent backstage spat at Spanish festival Summercase.

Referring to various articles that appeared in British newspapers over the weekend, Lydon said: "There's been a hell of a lot of 'freedom of the press', shall we say, where they’ve run wild, absolutely atrocious, really hurtful stories."
"My grandchildren are Jamaican," he added (which is the equivalent of "I'm not a racist, I got a black friend!"). "It's an absolute offence to them and me when I read stories like that, that are allowed to go to print absolutely unfounded."
He explained: "And [the newspapers] have the liberty to take liberties with a man like me and call me racist when my entire life has proved exactly the opposite."
Presenter Adrian Chiles then asked: "So you're not a racist then?" to which Lydon replied: "Absolutely not. And any bugger that says so is gonna have their day in court with me." - NME.COM

NEW DISCOVERY: Swivel Chairs

Sounds like: Pinback, Sebadoh, a masculine Camera Obscura, Later SonicYouth, Elliot Smith & 238

Rating:
5/5

Review by Amazon - The Slow Transmission is the first fruit of a two year creative burst that saw the musical partners write and record nearly 40 songs. The album is packed with a memorable collection of songs that range stylistically from retro guitar-pop to alt-country, new wave and folk-rock. The album's cohesion comes from the sharply crafted hooks that stick with the listener long after the album is done and the genuine emotions that come out in their lyrics. Album opener "Here Out Of Reach" takes a simple repeating guitar figure and builds on it with acoustic guitars, cello and vocal harmonies to tell a tale of disappointment and rejection. The propulsive drums and guitar of "Afterthought" combine with Jason Brown's declamatory lead vocals and Jeremy's harmony-heavy backing vocals on the chorus to convey the frustration of being taken for granted by the one you love. Whether it’s the elegiac "December Ghosts," the country-folk "Calloused Hands" or the layered guitar intricacy of the instrumental "Clockwise," the album keeps delivering from beginning to end.

Review by Stewart Mason - The second full-length by the Swivel Chairs is power pop the way it used to be a musical generation or so ago: say, between the release of the dB's' Stands for Decibels in 1981 and Cotton Mather's Kontiki in 1997. Unlike many contemporary power pop acts, songwriters Jason Brown and Jeremy Grites have little interest in slavish devotion to trying to replicate the sound of their musical idols. Those songs that do recall earlier acts (the dreamy "All at Once" has a strong Let's Active vibe, not least because Grites' breathy tenor at times sounds shockingly like Mitch Easter's) seem to do so either by accident or by virtue of shared musical antecedents: the Swivel Chairs have no evident interest in being the Rutles. The overall vibe of the album is low-key verging on mellow, but the songs' carefully detailed arrangements, clever hooks, strong melodies, and varied emotional moods, along with neat changeups like the spacy two-minute instrumental "Clockwise," keep The Slow Transmission from sounding like one deadened midtempo shuffle after another. Instead, this is a mature, intelligent pop record that's both a clear step up from the Swivel Chairs' earlier albums and proof that there's life in the pop underground yet.

Kings Of Leon Preview New Album, Offer Up Free Track

Head on over to KOL's website for a free mp3 download of the track 'Crawl' from their new album 'Only By The Night' set to drop 9/23. They've also posted a home movies trailer of sorts previewing another track from the album and footage taken during the album's recording sessions. Check it out.

John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band

I'm sure that everyone is well aware of John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band album but I just want to take a second to reflect on the Walrus and this album.

John Lennon is a fucking genius and the Plastic Ono Band album is a work of art!!! I've had this album for quite sometime and I always appreciated it but never really got a chance to dig in to it and let it sink in. Over the last couple days I've listened to this album maybe 13 times and I personally feel that it is some of the best post Beatles work ever produced (and just to be clear that's not a slight on any other solo album released by the Beatles members).

Lennon had a hit or miss career towards the end and after his split with the Beatles (due to his experimental works and relationship with Yoko) but the Plastic Ono Band album solidified Lennon as a solo artist that could produce introspective and imaginative material that was raw, emotional, deeply personal, painful and palatable with Yoko and without the help of Paul McCartney.

I easily would put this album in my top 10 albums of all time only to be proceded by the complete Beatles catalog and some of rock music's foundational albums.

NEW DISCOVERY: Wake The Bear

Wake the Bear is the new project from former Promenade vocalist/songwriter, Scott Cunningham. More woe; less rock. More keys; less guitar. Written, recorded and produced by Cunningham, Woe is Meat was released in October 2005.

A humble, dreamy lushness is crafted with acoustic guitars, keys, synths, layered voices and heart-swelling string sounds, all tied together by Cunningham’s emotive, vivacious lead vocals, which have the kind of effortless elasticity that only truly great singers can pull off.

Karen O from the YYY's debuted new side project , Native Korean Rock

Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O unveiled her side project Native Korean Rock on July 21st with two performances in the same night at Brooklyn's Union Pool venue.

The shows were only announced last week, but sold out instantly despite the low-key nature. Only 100 or so lucky fans got tickets for the 40-minute set of folky love songs and an elaborate nautically themed stage set which featured her singing from the hull of a model boat. Her back-up band consisted of drums, guitar and a string trio and were all dressed as sailors to fit the theme.

"I felt really nostalgic about playing love songs in New York in the summer because it’s pretty much what I did before the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's just what I felt like doing right now so I don't think there will be any more shows like this. The main thing I'm concentrating on is the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs record, which we’ve been working on for a while and it's nearly done. It should be out by early next year." - Karen O

Russia's got the right idea...

A new Russian law could make being an emo kid illegal in the eastern European country.

Legislation is currenting being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.

The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these "dangerous teen trends" encourage depression and suicide.

The legislation was presented last month at a hearing held by the State Durma, where critics claimed that the "negative" emo culture encourages anti-social behaviour and glorifies suicide.

Emo kids were described as teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that "cover half the face", reports The Guardian

The weekend saw mass protests by Russian emo kids.

In Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, where laws are already being implemented, protestors in a march held signs saying "A Totalitarian State Encourages Stupidity".

Dmitry Gilevich of Russian emo band MAIO stepped in backing the protests, saying: "Expressing psychological emotions is not forbidden by law."

However, emo critics remain unconvinced.

Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to bill sponsor Yevgeny Yuryev, described a ban as necessary, stating: "This is the first step in the public discourse."

The moves in Russia follow criticism of the genre in the UK earlier this year, which saw My Chemical Romance fans protesting at the offices of British newspaper The Daily Mail over their coverage which linked emo with suicide - NME.COM

Bloc Party Frontman Fights Johnny Rotten

Bloc Party lead singer Kele Okereke threw down fisticuffs over the weekend with none other than punk legend and Sex Pistols leader Johnny Rotten aka John Lydon.

From Billboard:

"Details are coming to light today about a brawl between Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke and the Sex Pistols' John Lydon, as well as members of the latter's entourage. The altercation took place backstage Saturday at Spain's Summercase festival.

Okereke, who describes the fight as an "unprovoked racist attack," endured "severe facial bruising" and a "split lip." He says he approached Lydon backstage at Summercase to ask if he'd ever reunite with Public Image Ltd., one of Okereke's favorite bands.

But according to Okereke, Lydon then "became intimidating and aggressive while his entourage responded with a racist tirade including the statement, 'Your problem is your black attitude.'"

A fight quickly ensued between Okereke and three members of Lydon's entourage, with Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson and Foals lead singer Yannis Philippakis becoming embroiled as well. Festival security broke things up but the altercation was reported to both Spanish and U.K. police.

"It's not an issue of the physical assault, even though it was an unprovoked attack, it is the fact that race was brought into the matter so readily," Okereke says in a statement. "Someone as respected and as intelligent as Lydon should know better than to bring race into the equation, or socialize with and encourage those who hold such narrow-minded attitudes. I am disappointed that someone I held with such high regard turns out to be such a bigot."

Lydon is blaming the entire incident on "jealousy," saying in a statement that "When you are at a festival with bands who are jealous fools, lies and confusion usually follow. If they need publicity so badly, this is the allegation universe they run into."

The artist further says that Okereke should "grow up and learn to be a true man. When you have achieved as much as I have, come back and talk to me. It's a shame that the wonderful world of the media is riddled with nonsense like this."

New Discovery: Little Brazil

* Artist: Little Brazil
* Release Date: February 22, 2005
* Label: Mt. Fuji Records / Redeye

Landon Hedges is best known outside of the Omaha indie rock scene as the bassist in Conor Oberst's rocking side project Desaparecidos and in Tim Kasher's gentler Cursive spin-off the Good Life, but like seemingly everyone else in that fertile scene, he's got his own albums to do. Little Brazil is a quartet with Hedges on guitar and vocals, plus bassist Dan Maxwell, second guitarist Austin Britton and drummer Corey Broman, all fellow members of the second tier of Omaha indie notables.

The obvious parallel is Sebadoh, but unlike Lou Barlow, Hedges has both a fairly bright lyrical and musical outlook and a knack for catchy indie pop tunes. The brief You and Me showcases both aspects, most notably in the jaunty sunshine pop (complete with acoustic guitars and handclaps) of the title track and the Apples in Stereo-meets-Pavement drive of the exceedingly catchy album high point, "Pointing Fingers." Hedges is perhaps a little anonymous as a singer, with a better than average but not particularly distinct voice, but his songwriting smarts are enough to pull You and Me through, and promise even better to come - Review by Stewart Mason, All Music Guide.

Strokes drummer...side project...girlfriend...new album!

The Strokes drummer Frabrizio Moretti is working on a new album with his girlfriend, Binki Shapiro.

The band's tentative name is Little Joy, which is also the name of a popular dive bar in the Echo Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

The album is slated for an autumn release on Rough Trade in the US, and is reminiscent of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vince Guaraldi and Sixties wall-of-sound girl groups, according to Rolling Stone.

Possible Janes Addiction Reunion in the works...

It seems that there is a very good chance that there is a Jane’s Addiction reunion in the works.
Front man Perry Farrell was quoted as saying "I sure would be open for it now…It sounds exciting to me as a listener. I just like to go out with people I think make beautiful music. As I say, we're not making war, we're making music, so how bad could it be?"Farrell admitted that bringing together the strong personalities of bandmates Dave Navarro, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins wouldn't be easy."We've got to figure out a common ground," Farrell said. "Jane's Addiction is a very inflammable group…there's a lot of very strong personalities. But I still think it would be worth it to get Jane's Addiction together because the people and the party that could ensue from that would be so amazing it's worth making up over."
When asked what it would take to bring the band back together, Farrell responded, "Meetings. We're actually gonna have a meeting -- it's planned for sometime soon. But I'm not promising anything. One day I could just get so hot I could think I can't do it. But I think I'm old enough now I think I can do it."

Andy Dick Jailed on Sexual Battery, Drug Charges

You're probably just as shocked and appalled as I am but everyone's favorite not-funny man, Andy Dick was arrested early Wednesday in investigation of drug use and sexual battery at a freakin' BW3's.

"Police were called to the Buffalo Wild Wings in Murrieta, CA at about 1:13 a.m. to investigate a report of "an intoxicated male" urinating outside the bar and causing a disturbance, according to a police statement.

When they arrived, a 17-year-old girl told police that she was outside when Dick left the bar, walked up, "grabbed her tank top and bra and pulled them down and exposed her breasts," the statement said.

Friends escorted Dick to a truck, which officers stopped at a nearby Sam's Club, police said.

Dick was identified by the teenager and a witness, police said.

Marijuana and the drug Xanax were found his pants pockets during a search and he appeared "extremely intoxicated," police said.

Dick, 42, was booked at Southwest Detention Center in French Valley on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor sexual battery and misdemeanor possession of marijuana." [AP]

Dick joins Kanye West at the top of the leaderboard for celebrity asshole of the year.

‘Goodbye Yellow Brickle’ road has been formulated to celebrate Elton’s performance this month in Vermont, the state that Ben & Jerry’s comes from.

Super Producer, Phil Spector, is still not out of the woods...

After Phil Spector’s trial ended in a mistrial last September after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in his murder charges in the death of actress Lana Clarkson, attorneys are now gearing up for a re-trial based on a new witness testimony.

Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson’s new witness, Norma Kemper, reportedly gave investigators an account with the same locations Spector visited the night of Clarkson's death.

Kemper, who was hired as Spector's assistant in 1996, claims that he took her to dinner at Dan Tana's, the Los Angeles restaurant he visited the night of Clarkson's death. She claims that Spector became drunk and made romantic advances toward her. When she turned him down, he allegedly showed her a holstered gun under his jacket and said, "You know I could kill you right now."

Spector's defense attorneys say they intend to oppose the use of Kemper's testimony in the re-trial, along with those of five other women who testified in Spector's original murder trial.

Stone Roses Front Man Veto's Reunion...

According to Stone Roses Bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield, there will not be a reunion because Stone Roses front man Ian Brown is dead set against the idea. No real explanation has been given to why Brown is not for the idea but a possible tour and new album will be put on hold until Brown can commit.

NEW VIDEO: Radiohead - "House Of Cards"

Just when you think Radiohead couldn't possibly be anymore original, they release the new video for "House Of Cards" off their In Rainbows album. The video was shot without a single camera using two state of the art technologies called Geometric Informatics and Velodyne Lidar. Here a little explanation: "The Geometric Informatics scanning system employs structured light to capture detailed 3D images at close proximity, and was used to render the performances of Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the female lead, and several partygoers. The Velodyne Lidar system uses multiple lasers to capture large environments in 3D, in this case 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute, capturing all of the exterior scenes and wide party shots." I'm pretty sure it's going to be Radiohead that finds the cure for cancer.

Thom Yorke...Media Superman!

Thom Yorke has been named one of the most powerful people in the media industry for Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' pay-what-you-like strategy.

The frontman was placed at number 63 in The Guardian's Media Top 100 2008 chart for the cultural, political and economic changes the band's method of sale created.

The newspaper included the singer for his "pioneering example of the new business model in today's digital landscape, with creatives cutting out the middleman - in Radiohead's case, their old record label EMI - and selling the content online themselves".

They claim Radiohead's model influenced subsequent releases by Nine Inch Nails and The Charlatans - who gave their albums 'The Slip' and 'You Cross My Path' away for free - and Coldplay, who made their comeback single 'Violet Hill' available as a free download - NME.COM

Bloc Party's Gordon Moakes takes a leave of absence...

The bassist will take a break from touring as he is on paternity leave from the band.

"Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to join the boys during the next month or so of touring," he explained. "The reason for this is that my wife is expecting our first baby in a few weeks and after some long hard thinking we all decided, band included, that it was a bit silly for me to be flying round the world at such a critical time in the pregnancy.

"No one wants me to wind up in the wrong continent should there be any complications or should the little one decide to put in an early appearance. So while the other chaps are jetting around the Pacific Rim I will be buying the groceries, attending ante-natal classes and generally preparing myself for the cloud of unknown that is becoming a dad."

The band's friend, Daniel Lindegren, aka Tommy Sparks, will fill in on bass for the band.

"For the next few weeks Daniel will be doing his best to cover my portfolio of bass, keys, buttons, knobs and things that go 'clonk'," said Moakes.

"He is more than proficient at many of these things so I can't see it marring anyone's enjoyment of the Bloc Party experience while I'm away. All being well, I will return to reclaim my mantle around the end of August, possibly bringing with me some profound wisdom as a new father, if not a complete lack of sleep."

The band's first show with Daniel Lindegren will be the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan at the end of July, which will see him make his debut in front of 20,000 fans - NME.COM

NEW VIDEO: Albert Hammond Jr. - "GfC"

The new video of the first single from The Strokes' guitarist new album. 'Como Te Llama?', Albert's second solo effort, hits shelves today (7/8). This should keep us salivating until The Strokes' long overdue return. The band's website has hinted that the boys will be back at it in early 2009. Maybe the fact that Al has no major tour scheduled in support of the new album is a good thing.

The National Design T-Shirt To Help Obama Campaign

Barack has picked up yet another huge indie rock endorsement, this time coming from Brooklyn's The National. The Cincinnati transplants have used their keen fashion sense to come up with a t-shirt in which they will donate every red cent from sales to the Obama campaign.

The shirt is actually a lot more clever than it looks at first glance. Along with November being election month, the term 'Mr. November' comes from the name of the closing track from The National's 2005 album Alligator. The shirts are available online now in men's and women's sizes. Impress all your friends and be the first to pick one up here.

Jack White Writes Poem for Motown

Jack White of White Stripes and Raconteurs fame has written a poem confessing his love for his hometown of Detroit, MI. Detroit what!

From NME, "White says that in the past his feelings about his hometown have been misconstrued, and this drove him to write the poem entitled ‘Courageous Dream’s Concern’, which was published in the Detroit Free Press yesterday (July 6)."

White prefaced his work by saying "The following poem is the Detroit from my mind, the Detroit that is in my heart, the home that encapsulates and envelops those who are truly blessed with the experience of living within its boundaries."

Courageous Dream's Concern

I have driven slow,
three miles an hour or so,
through Highland Park, Heidelberg, and the
Cass Corridor.
I've hopped on the Michigan,
and transferred to the Woodward,
and heard the good word blaring from an
a.m. radio.
I love the worn-through tracks of trolley
trains breaking through their
concrete vaults,
As I ride the Fort Street or the Baker,
just making my way home.

I sneak through an iron gate, and fish
rock bass out of the strait,
watching the mail boat with
its tugboat gait,
hauling words I'll never know.
The water letter carrier,
bringing prose to lonely sailors,
treading the big lakes with their trailers,
floats in blue green chopping waters,
above long-lost sunken failures,
awaiting exhumation iron whalers,
holding gold we'll never know.

I've slid on Belle Isle,
and rowed inside of it for miles.
Seeing white deer running alongside
While I glide, in a canoe.
I've walked down Caniff holding a glass
Atlas root beer bottle in my hands
And I've entered closets of coney islands
early in the morning too.
I've taken malt from Stroh's and Sanders,
felt the black powder of abandoned
embers,
And smelled the sawdust from wood cut
to rehabilitate the fallen edifice.
I've walked to the rhythm of mariachis,
down junctions and back alleys,
Breathing fresh-baked fumes of culture
nurtured of the Latin and the
Middle East.
I've fallen down on public ice,
and skated in my own delight,
and slid again on metal crutches
into trafficked avenues.

Three motors moved us forward,
Leaving smaller engines to wither,
the aluminum, and torpedo,
Monuments to unclaimed dreaming.
Foundry's piston tempest captured,
Forward pushing workers raptured,
Frescoed families strife fractured,
Encased by factory's glass ceiling.

Detroit, you hold what one's been seeking,
Holding off the coward-armies weakling,
Always rising from the ashes
not returning to the earth.

I so love your heart that burns
That in your people's body yearns
To perpetuate,
and permeate,
the lonely dream that does encapsulate,
Your spirit, that God insulates,
With courageous dream's concern.

Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold Covers Judee Sill

That beaut of a song is called "Crayon Angels" and was filmed for a website called "Black Cab Sessions". The basic idea is one band, one song, and one take while riding in the back of a London taxi cab. Check out other bands takes here.

In addition to releasing two of my favorite records so far this year (Sun Giant EP and Fleet Foxes), these Pacific Northwesterners are are making a ton of noise here in the states and over seas. Their self-titled debut is challenging the likes of Coldplay for the #1 spot in the UK. Not to mention they are also opening up for Wilco on a couple of dates. Get to know these guys.

So you wanna fake being an Indie Rock expert?

So you're sick of digesting mainstream, overproduced drivel from the likes of MTV and the local "be-caller-100" pop station. You'd like to be edgier and more "underground" - or at least you'd like to pretend you're both those things. The only trouble is, you don't know where to begin. Being in-the-know about independent rock music - a.k.a. "indie rock" - can seem like an overwhelming task. Indie fans often come across as if they belong to some sort of secret society, frowning upon all those poor, ignorant souls who just don't "get it" when it comes to music. Lies. We're here to tell you that you too can be a hipster. By learning the basics of what the indie phenomenon is all about, you should be well on your way to passing yourself off as a die-hard fan. - soyouwanna.com

Jim James to Record Album with M. Ward and...... Conor Oberst.

OK... I'm not the biggest Conor Oberst fan. If you're reading this and you are, then my apologies. I will say it is absolutely impossible to avoid him. I compare him to the friend you have that is ok in small doses but wears out their welcome pretty quick. Somehow, some way they always seem to find their way to wherever you are. It just got a lot tougher for me to forget about ol' Bright Eyes.
According to a Rolling Stone interview, Oberst will teaming with MMJ front man Jim James and solo artist extraordinaire M. Ward. This power trio has found a way to clear enough of their schedules to work on a collaboration album. Not a whole lot of details out there right now but some are sure to follow soon.

BTW... The Karate Kid is on in full high def glory on HDNet right now. Don't expect many posts from me for the next 24 hours while I allow it all to sink in.

NEW MUSIC: One Day as a Lion

The new project from Zack de la Rocha (formerly of Rage Against the Machine ) and drummer Jon Theodore (formerly of Mars Volta). The name taken from the infamous 1970 black and white, captured by legendary Chicano photographer George Rodriguez featuring a center framed tag on a white wall in an unspecified section of Boyle Heights. It reads: ‘It’s better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb.’

This record is a stripped down attempt to realize this sentiment in sound The EP was recorded by Robert Carranza at Ocean Way Recording. It is due out July 22, 2008. To date, no music is available but it is expected to appear shortly.

New Black Kids Album......sort of.

Black Kids are to release a new, full-length album on Columbia Records called Partie Traumatic on July 22 2008. Even though they've received such critical acclaim with their first couple of singles, they might leave fans feeling cheated with their new album because it supposedly will only feature 3 new songs in addition to the songs.

Overview provided by indierockcafe.com:

With danceable, catchy songs reminiscent of a mix between The Cure and Arcade Fire, Jacksonville, Florida's indie outfit Black Kids have received a heavy dose of critical acclaim, blogger buzz, and the inevitable backlash over the past year. The band, who made it on to the indie music map with the singles "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" and "Hurricane Jane" (see link below) is now under enormous pressure with the upcoming release of their debut album, and fans and critics will be expecting more than just a hurried release containing a set of mediocre songs.
