Older Band But A Newer Discovery: The Meeting Places

I've had these guys on a wish list for some time but have never been able to find any of their material. Thank god my internet skills are up to par. It seems they've been on a hiatus for a couple years but this statement was made by the band in late April 2008 - "It’s been awhile, yeah? Well, it looks like it’s time to dust off the old gear and get this shit rolling. Scott has officially re-joined the band and it looks like we are going to start making some noise.
Stay tuned…"

Review of "Find Yourself Along The Way" by way of words-on-music.com

The Meeting Places' debut CD was recorded in Autumn, 2002 by Aaron Espinonza, the heralded musician [Earlimart] and producer [Elliot Smith, The Breeders, Folk Implosion]. While the album's elements and textures evoke the best of the early 1990s dream pop tradition (Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride), singer Chase Harris' inimitable vocal delivery leads the quartet into memorable, unfamiliar sonic territory.

"Freeze Our Stares" launches the album with Scott McDonald's trademark thick, shimmered coatings of guitar resonance. Harris' cool, self-assured vocal melodies on "You Could Never Be the One" and "On Our Own" hint of vintage Jesus and Mary Chain. "See Through You" is a more casual, but no less poignant, excursion into more delicate melodic structures, recalling Souvlaki-era Slowdive. Dean Yoshihara's nimble drumming propels the buoyant "Wide Awake" and ushers "Same Lies As Yesterday" through to its soaring chorus. "Take to the Sun" is a three-act epic suggesting Spiritualized — leading with Harris' distant vocals, transitioning into Arthur Chan's bass-driven middle act, and ending with a noise-laden coda.

Find Yourself Along the Way escorts dream pop into its next phase — songs written with flair and tunefulness, enchantingly dressed in an echoed veneer.

Review of "Numbered Days" by way of words-on-music.com

Numbered Days is the second album of luminous, infectious noise-pop by Los Angeles' The Meeting Places. On their sophomore record the quartet has written ten new songs that craftily combine melodic indie-pop with the tremulous soundscapes first explored on their debut Find Yourself Along The Way (Words On Music, 2003). Numbered Days was recorded at The Ship by Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy, Earlimart).

The Meeting Places' renowned mastery of noise-pop shines through in the gorgeous melodies of "Until It's Gone" and in the blistering, darker guitar work of "Sink Into Stone" — two songs on different ends of the lyrical and sonic spectrum in which singer Chase Harris delves into changes in his family life.

Harris' vocal delivery serves as a refreshing counterpoint to the egocentric formula calculated by most singers on the scene today. The Meeting Places' more egalitarian approach to their art provides Harris with a forum to make subtler points with his lyrics, the impact of which may be dulled in the moment, but deepened over time. For example, on "Pause," the music has a deceptively relaxed cadence — resurrecting "Sister of Europe"-era Psychedelic Furs — that temporarily cloaks the intensity of Harris' narrative of a relationship deteriorating into autopilot.

The inclusion of resonating atmospherics is, for The Meeting Places, never an end itself, only a means to an end. Instead of droning into nothingness, shimmering coats of reverb anchor the songs to set up the delivery of a well-placed hook or a knockout punch of a chorus, such as in the boisterous, pulsating "Nothing's The Same" or the catchy, upbeat "Hall of Fame."

The cunning implementation of dynamics and sundry instruments (e.g. piano, glockenspiel), showcase The Meeting Places' songwriting talents, as in the album closer "Cardboard Robot" which alternates between a calm, unwavering verse and a searing chorus that detours into early My Bloody Valentine and kraut-rock: both pieces stitched together seamlessly by Arthur Chan's melodic basslines.

Scott McDonald's howling guitar melodies sometimes take their cues from Eastern music ("Love Like The Movies," "Numbered Days," "Pause"), imposing order and form to the reverberating ambience that lurks beneath the surface. Dean Yoshihara's relentless drumming fastens the music to rhythms that help to broker an immediate relationship between the listener and the band.

With ten songs clocking in at thirty-three minutes, Numbered Days evokes a leaner, more urgent approach to songwriting, in the spirit of The Jesus and Mary Chain's Darklands or The Shins' Oh, Inverted World. Compositions judiciously weave together from start to finish with a proportionality rarely found in an age whose digital format tends to bloat records by the inclusion of filler.

NEW MUSIC: Bottle Up & Go

Dig this Garage/Blues duo from Brooklyn/CT. These guys flat out rock. They've channeled the spirit of Hendrix in same vein as The White Stripes and The Black Keys. Their debut EP These Bones is set for formal release in mid July. Sample cuts over at their MySpace page. If you're an eMusic subscriber, the EP is available now for advance download.

From 230 Publicity:

BOTTLE UP & GO formed in the dank basement cage of a peeling wooden-framed house on the campus of Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Take a closer look at the scene that surrounds this small and unassuming liberal arts school and you'll see a burgeoning musical environment that strikes the balance between high art and primal energy.

"I believe there is something pent up at our school," says BOTTLE UP AND GO drummer Fareed Sajan. "People want something loud, but still intelligent and doused with meaning or, perhaps, a tradition that is larger than what is current to our times."

Sajan and singer/songwriter/guitarist, Keenan Mitchell, took inspiration for BOTTLE UP AND GO from chain-gang blues, slave-song howls, murder ballads and bootleg whiskey. "Indie sometimes falls to the mercy of being too soft spoken and heavy on the melodic emphasis. It somehow doesn't have the primal urges and roots we want. Adapting blues in a punk/post-punk mindset is something that feels natural to us."

BOTTLE UP AND GO's live show features Keenan's grating, art-damaged slide guitar work and impassioned, frothing-at-the-mouth vocals, with Fareed pounding heavily and crashing into the drum set to fiercely accentuate rhythmic intricacies. Keenan notes that their music is "loud and drunk and direct.” He adds, “We like to see people standing up right in front and moving their bodies." This is certainly not the cheap, white boy blues you've heard a million times before and winced at. It's the primal call of tradition; echoes of Charlie Patton, Blind Willie Johson, Leadbelly and even Hound Dog Taylor... filtered, fucked and warped by the insanity of our modern age.

Documenting music this raw required an equally raw approach. The songs that would become the These Bones EP were recorded at the Eclectic Literary Society, an old mansion on the campus of Wesleyan. Keenan and Fareed set up their instruments on opposite ends of a huge ballroom with a wonderfully natural, reverberant sound and fired through all the songs in six drunken hours. "I think a few hours in the studio captures our sound better than a few months” says Keenan adding, “What could we practice for that long?" BOTTLE UP AND GO emerged from the mansion-turned-studio with a recording capturing the immediacy and passion of their live performance; the true sound of musicians without being glossed over by studio band-aids or digital tricks.

Mitchell's tales of heartache, hard times and hard partying remind us all of how little have changed in the past 100 years of western music. "I guess nothing ever changes, really," adds Fareed "people still get drunk, and fight and cheat and fall in and out of love." These familiar themes resonate on entirely new levels in the 21st century, as technology has left us more lonely, alienated and depressed than ever before, leaving culture to die a slow and painful death. After all, wasn't the blues THE original cry to be heard amongst tyranny and oppressive forces? If nothing else, BOTTLE UP AND GO are paying homage to blues, embodying its particular expression in the face of darkness.

This is more than just the blues, its depression.

DOWNLOAD: Forest Fire - "Survival"

Check out this new album from the Brooklyn based band Forest Fire. Free download available here. Color me impressed especially since I just happened to stumble across this one.

From the band's website:

Survival was recorded over an eight month period in two locations- Brooklyn, New York and Portland, Oregon. "Not all the members of Forest Fire live on the same coastline," Mark Thresher explains, "So when certain friends roll through town, things happen pretty quickly." Consequently, long periods of time passed between sessions and the songs sat untouched for months. Many of the tracks were recorded live in less than five takes, then maniacally overdubbed by a variety of players. Sometimes there was only one microphone for the entire band. Sometimes they pulled out a few more. "No one was in a hurry," Thresher says, "but eventually enough material was gathered to justify putting something out."

"For me, this thing is a document of stylistic integrity that felt very important to all of us at the time," says Thresher. But Survival also houses a feeling of blatant disregard, one that unabashedly nods to the rich and historic landscape of American punk rock. The tracks are littered with out-of-tune horns, vibrant bursts of guitar and layers of screeching electronics. Nathan Delffs' frantic guitar work threads throughout dark and carefully executed harmonies by the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Myisha Battle and Nick Delffs (Shaky Hands). Ghostly synthesizers, arresting vocals and loose percussion are woven together under the glimmering production values of Adam Spittler. Thresher's lyrics also require a close listen; while brief, they remain consistently purposeful and sincere.

Survival is a moment-to-moment kind of recording. Songs of total grit will suddenly part to reveal blue sky, before dissolving once again into disorder. On tracks such as "Slow Motion" and "Sunshine City," sparse arrangements creep along, then grow as thick and tangled as jungle brush. On "Through My Gloves," Thresher spits in waves, threatening and concise, and ditches the restrained lyrical approach for a moment. He casts a convincing scene; "I'm living for what's on my mind," as if to defend something sacred. In contrast, "I Make Windows" aches along delicately and the catchy and imaginative "Fortune Teller" holds an outright pop sensibility. Although Thresher describes it simply as "something that felt very important to all of us at the time," Survival is a modern album, built with enough fortitude and spirit to warrant repeated listens.

Can Pacquiao finanlly make the Philippines #1 in the world at something?!

From here on out, World Jr. Lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao (46-3-2, 35 KO) is playing for the icing. He is considered a god by many Filipinos around the world and is a World champion in three weight classes (112, 126, 130) with another title to boot at 122.

Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KOs), from General Santos City, Philippines, boxing's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, attempts to become the first Asian to win four sanctioned world titles in as many different divisions, when he challenges Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KOs), from Chicago, for his title, tonight at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Kings Of Leon Reveal New Album Details

Nashville's Kings Of Leon have released some minor details about their 4th studio album 'Only By The Night'. The follow-up to 2007's Because Of The Times is set to drop September 23rd.
Frontman Caleb Followill quipped that the pills he's been taking following surgery to repair his arm from a fistfight with his brother Nathan may have played a role in the new album.
“I don’t know if it was the pills or what, but the melodies were so much stronger than anything I’ve ever done — it’s just really beautiful songs,” he said.
“I know I sound like a fucking cock right now, but this is the first time I’ve really been proud of myself, track for track," he told Rolling Stone.
The band have also reportedly been hitting the bottle for a bit of inspiration. “We had to get drunk because we all have girlfriends to go home to and deal with,” Caleb said.
Song titles includes 'Cold Desert' and 'Crawl', a track with political overtones. “Let’s just say that Sean Penn is gonna like us more,” he said.

Kanye Reacts to Bonnaroo Incident

Kanye West took the stage at Bonnaroo 2 hours after his scheduled 2:45am show time and was greeted by festival goers with boos and chants of "Kanye sucks".
Ken Weinstein, a spokesman for the annual festival held on a 700-acre site south of Nashville, said the delay was simply a matter of unloading the Pearl Jam stage (the band went an hour past its scheduled end time, playing until about 1:15 a.m.) and loading the West stage. [AP]
In case you still need a reason to dislike Kanye, here's his reaction to the whole mess taken from his blog posting:

"I am sick of negative people who just sit around trying 2 plot my downfall... Why???? I understand if people don't like me because I like me or if people think tight clothes look gay or people say I run my mouth to much, But this Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I've ever had in my life. This is the most offended I've ever been... this is the maddest I ever will be. I'm typing so fucking hard I might break my fucking Mac book Air!!!!!!!! Call me any name you want.... arrogant, conceited, narcissistic, racist, metro, fag whatever you can think of.... BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN'T GIVE MY ALL! NEVER SAY I DIDN'T GIVE MY ALL! THIS SHOWS NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO BE GOOD AT SOMETHING THERE WILL BE PEOPLE THERE TO LIE ABOUT YOU AND BRING YOU DOWN! LIKE WAYNE SAYS PLEASE DON'T SHOOT ME DOWN CAUSE I'M FLYING! I'M FUCKING HURT BY THIS ONE. ALL I CARE ABOUT ARE THE FANS. JUST SAY THIS OUT LOUD IN A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE, "KANYE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT GIVING A GOOD PERFORMANCE." CAN ANYONE HONESTLY SAY THAT ????????? HAS ANYONE EVEN TAKEN THE TIME TO AT LEAST DO THE MATH??? BONNAROO SHOULD HAVE RELEASED A STATEMENT IN MY DEFENSE BUT SINCE THEY HAVEN'T LET'S BREAK DOWN THE WALLS ON THIS TRUMAN SHOW AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY OCCURRED!!! FOR OVER A MONTH WE WENT BACK AND FORTH ON WETHER OR NOT WE COULD EVEN FIT MY STAGE AT THE FESTIVAL. ONE DAY THEY WOULD SAY YES... WE'D SEND THEM OUR SPECS THEN THEY THEY'D SAY OK... THEN THEY WOULD SEND SPECS BACK THAT DIDN'T FIT THE STAGE. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH FUCKING IDIOTS WHO DIDN'T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY. THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE ... I HAVE A FUCKING LIGHT SHOW DUMB ASS, IT'S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS! MY PEOPLE WORKED OUT A COMPROMISED STAGE PLOT AND A 3AM TIME SLOT AND I AGREED. FAST FOWARD TO THE DAY OF THE SHOW. MY PRODUCTION MANAGER TRIED TO LOAD IN FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE I WENT ON STAGE BUT THE FESTIVAL WOULDN'T ALLOW US TO DO ANYTHING UNTILL PEARL JAM LEFT THE STAGE. PEARL JAM ENDED ONE HOUR
LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT THAT POINT WE'RE RACING AGAINST THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT 4:20AM DON COMES BACK 2 THE BUS AND TELLS ME, " IT WOULD TAKE 45 MORE MINUTES TO PUT ALL YOUR PYRO IN!" I SAY I HAVE TO GET OUT THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE . I HIT THE STAGE AND PEOPLE HAD BEEN THROWING SHIT ON THE STAGE AND HAD ACTUALLY HIT THE JANE SCREEN WITH, I GUESS BOTTLES OR SOMETHING AND HAD BROKEN MY FUCKING SCREEN. REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE A SHORTY AND WATER WOULD HIT THE TV?????? WHEN I GOT 2 "THROUGH THE WIRE" I STEPPED ON THE FRONT PART OF MY STAGE AND THERE WAS SO MUCH LIQUID ON THE STAGE I COULDN'T MOVE WITHOUT SLIPPING. I HAD TO ADJUST MY WHOLE PERFORMANCE STYLE BECAUSE OF IT. A FEW MORE SONGS IN AND THE SONG WAS ON IT'S WAY UP.. I CUT A FEW SONGS FROM THE SET BECAUSE I WANTED PEOPLE 2 EXPERIENCE STRONGER WHILE THERE WAS STILL SOME DARKNESS TO PERFORM IT IN. I'VE STRUGGLED WITH STRONGER FROM IT'S CONCEPTION. REMEMBER LAST SUMMER WHEN I CANCELED SOME TV APPEARANCES. IT WAS BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO PERFORM STRONGER IN THE DAYTIME. ANYONE WHO CAME TO THE GLOW TOUR CAN UNDERSTAND WHY I WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE IT PROPERLY. IT BROKE MY HEART THAT I COULDN'T GIVE THESE FANS STRONGER IN IT'S GREATEST FORM... BY THE TIME I GOT TO STRONGER IT WAS DAYTIME AND IT BROKE MY HEART. I'M SORRY TO EVERYONE THAT I DIDN'T HAVE THE ABILITY 2 GIVE THE PERFORMANCE I WANTED TO. I'M SORRY... SOMETIMES I GO 2, 3 DAYS W/O SLEEP WORKING ON MY PERFORMANCE... I HAVE TO ICE MY KNEES AFTER EVERY SHOW AND THEY HURT WHEN I WALK THROUGH THE AIRPORT... HAVING AN EXPENSIVE STAGE CUTS MY PAYDAY IN HALF... CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN'T GIVE MY ALL!!!"

Throw Me The Statues - Moonbeams (2008) Secretly Canadian

Way to go Losik!!!

First off, I just want to congratulate Brandon on showing a little gumption and stick-to-itiveness and following up on something that I was frankly, to lazy to do. I’m extremely excited that you set this thing up. It’s pretty cool to have a little corner of the internet to reign as the professional appreciators of music/pop culture and pass judgment on the mush-brains that helped sell 1,000,000 copies of the weak ass Lil Wayne album. Thanks for the soapbox!

MMJ Radio City Music Hall

What does this image remind you of?

the my morning jacket radio city music hall show was great. they played through their newer tracks towards the begining - their new album is 50/50 for me... it's hard to get unless you know where they are coming from. then they got into what they do best - totally kicking ass.

In case you are in a record store any time soon - my favorite albums of theirs are 1) It Still Moves 2) Okonokos (live double album) 3) "Z" and 4) Acoustic Citsuoca. Not necessarily in that order.

someone (i think paste mag) wrote that attempts of listening to them are futile unless you've seen them live. it's a fair assessment - i think they are the best live american band, up there with the white stripes and wilco. The flaming lips are probably up there, too - but i've never seen them. am i missing anyone? the black keys, maybe... but they are not on the same level.

if you haven't been to radio city music hall - go. it sounds great in there... it felt as open as an outdoor show. even mr. jim james himself commented on the hall's prestige, and elaborated on how he "channeled the spirits" backstage. he had something in him, and it was evident as he trekked up and down the side balconies 30 feet away from me (i was in the 2nd mez) jamming wirelessly with the band. oh, to be a rock star.

blogosphere blast off

Let me start with props to Lo for starting a blog. Pay attention to him - for over a decade he has been known as the holder of all useless knowledge. His knack for tattooing things to his brain is a renewable resource for transient fellas like myself. But now he is starting something. And starting, of course, is the first step to anything. We are both glad you are here.

Trailer for New Coen Bros Flick 'Burn After Reading'

The Coen's are riding the 'No Country' Oscar wave and are wasting no time following up with this comedy. Looks like they are working on putting together quite the hot streak.

Girl Talk's Feed the Animals Now Available Online

Gregg "Girl Talk" Gillis is pulling a Radiohead and offering up his new album as a pay-what-you-please. Whatever you choose to pay gets you the full album in 320 kbps MP3s but you'll be asked a fair question if you decide to go the free route. Paying $5 or more will get you the album in lossless FLAC files plus access to a single file containing the whole disc. Shell out $10 and you get all mentioned above, plus the label will get you a hard CD copy of the album when it's released on September 23 for a $3 shipping fee.
